Dr. Julia Oelker

My work focuses on bio-optical in situ sensors as well as ocean color satellite data. Since May 2023 I am working at the ICBM as part of the "Underway" Research Data project coordinated by the German Marine Research Alliance (DAM). The project aims at providing underway data under FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles from permanently installed, automatic measuring systems onboard German research vessels. The ICBM is responsible for the bio-optical sensors. Quality assurance and control as well as publication of underway chlorophyll-a and turbidity data are a major part of the work. Chlorophyll-a is commonly used as proxy for the oceanic biomass and is one of the "essential ocean variables" and "essential climate variables". Therefore it is one of the key parameters for understanding the ocean in terms of forecast, early warning, and climate projections. Permanently installed radiometers will be included in the near future.
