Honours Symposium Prof. Krumbein
Symposium in honour of Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Elisabeth Krumbein
Date: 3 November 2021
Location: icbm.de/webkolloq
Time: 4.00 - 6.30 pm
The geomicrobiologist Prof. Dr Wolfgang E. Krumbein was the founding director of the Institute of Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) at the University of Oldenburg and died on 4 April 2021 in Berlin at the age of 84. In 1974, he accepted the call to the newly founded University of Oldenburg and was elected the first director of the ICBM in 1987. Krumbein is considered one of the founders of geomicrobiology. In his research, he not only investigated how microbes destroy and recreate natural minerals, but also proved that they have an influence on the formation of a patina on buildings, sculptures and paintings. He also investigated the possibility of microbial life on other celestial bodies. By the time he retired in 2002, he had published more than 400 scientific articles and 15 books on geomicrobiology and geophysiology.
