The tutor-led first semester tutorials in the Department of Computing Science at the University of Oldenburg make it easier for first-year students to start their studies. Designed as an orientation aid , the tutors discuss a wide range of topics relating to studying, the university and student life with the students. There is also a main topic for each tutorial, which is explained in more detail. Here are some examples:

• Individual study planning
• General study procedures
• Organisation and structure of the Department of Computing Science and the university
• Dealing with lecturers, students and fellow students
• BAföG and student finance
• Examinations
• Contact persons & committees
• Study support: learning strategies and working techniques
• Leisure activities and (university) sports
• "Life support" etc.

The clarification of current questions and problems concerning student life is another central task of the student support centres. The most frequently asked questions will be collected and made available here as FAQs in future.

As part of the first semester tutorials, departmental visits have also recently been organised within the Department. This gives students the opportunity to get to know lecturers, staff and their work within the university.

The first semester tutorials take place in weekly meetings (tutorials) in small groups in a relaxed atmosphere. The first semester tutorials are supervised by students from higher semesters.
