Sorted out! (2025)
Exhibition from 17 May to 15 June 2025
Dates: 17 May to 15 June 2025
Venue: Bremen Harbour Museum
Why do we sort through our clothes? Why do we become more attached to certain items than others? Where do my clothes end up after I’ve put them in a used clothing collection bin? And what is a ‘textile tentacle’? These and many more questions are answered by the exhibition ‘Aussortiert!’, which runs from 17 May to 15 June 2025 at the Bremen Port Museum.
Across four exhibition areas, the exhibition uses clothes, shoes, bags and underwear to show what happens to our clothes once they’ve left the wardrobe. Starting with the process of sorting, it highlights various possibilities for where clothes might end up. Do they stay within our personal circle or end up at a market in Ghana? Might they be resold online or in a second-hand shop? Through the exhibition’s interactive and participatory design, visitors are invited to sort through their own items and reflect on their own relationship with clothing.
The exhibition was curated by seven female students from the 2023 class of the Master’s programme in Museum and Exhibition Studies, who have engaged intensively with curatorial processes as part of their studies – from identifying a theme and developing a concept through to designing the exhibition. The project was supervised by Svenja Jessen (first supervisor) and Dr Klara von Lindern (second supervisor) from the Institute of Material Culture at the University of Oldenburg.
