Sorted out!

Why do we sort out clothes? Why do we love certain items more than others? Where do my clothes end up after I put them in an old clothes container? And what is a textile tentacle? These and many other questions are answered by the exhibition "Aussortiert!", which can be seen at the Hafenmuseum Bremen from 17 May to 15 June 2025.

Starting with the process of sorting out, various possibilities are shown as to where clothing could go. The interactive and participatory design of the exhibition is intended to invite visitors to sort out their own clothes and reflect on their own approach to clothing.

Protest.moves.Uni.

What motivates a university like the University of Oldenburg? What role did protests play in its development? And how have forms of student involvement changed over the last 50 years?

The exhibition Protest.bewegt.Uni, which is being shown in the former teachers' seminar at Peterstraße 42 in Oldenburg from 10 March to 5 May 2024 to mark the university's 50th anniversary, is dedicated to these questions.

From early disputes over the naming of the university to current climate protests, the exhibition sheds light exclusively on protest cultures at the University of Oldenburg. Interviews with contemporary witnesses and numerous objects make an eventful history tangible - and encourage visitors to engage with protest, change and participation.

frei|zeit - Sense and nonsense of the hobby

What actually happens when everyone just does what they want? Does the utopian idea of the 4-day week, the unconditional basic income and the perfect work-life balance work? And when does a leisure activity actually become a hobby? The exhibition "frei|zeit - Sinn und Unsinn des Hobbys", which can be seen from 19 March to 2 April 2022 at Raum auf Zeit at Staustraße 16 in Oldenburg, deals with these topics. Among other things, visitors can learn more about the historical development of hobbies, but also reflect on the extent to which leisure activities can exclude certain groups of people.

Had enough? Minimalism in the wardrobe

Planning and staging an exhibition entirely online during a pandemic – can it really work? The twelve students from the 2019 class of the ‘Museum and Exhibition’ Master’s programme at the University of Oldenburg decided to give it a go. Decluttering, caring for possessions and mindful consumption: these are the three textile practices of minimalism explored in the digital exhibition, through which the students aim to demonstrate just how diverse minimalism is.

The exhibition can be viewed for two weeks from 10 March 2021 at www.genug-ausstellung.de.

Village fiction? Between pixel and brushstroke

Villages are everywhere in everyday life: when shopping for products in the supermarket, reading a book or playing games on your smartphone. To what extent do these representations characterise the personal 'village image'? How are they used in different media genres to create certain impressions?

These and other questions are addressed in the exhibition Fiction Village? Between Pixel and Brushstroke. Visitors will not only gain insights into different areas such as art, gaming, advertising and literature, but will also be able to actively make their own contributions to the exhibition.

Theory and history of the museum

In the Theory and History of the Museum seminar, students on the Museum and Exhibition Master's programme explore the institution of the museum, its core tasks of collecting, preserving, exhibiting, mediating and researching, as well as participation and criticism of power. In the summer semester 2020, the students designed podcasts on the literature of the seminar and thus enriched the online teaching.
The seminar was run by Dr Mareike Witkowski and Dr Carolin Krämer.

How We Know - Interfaces between research and everyday life

Where do we acquire our everyday knowledge? What knowledge do we retain, pass on or lose over the course of our lives? How do the media, people and trends influence or manipulate us today, just as they have in the past?

These and other questions are explored in the exhibition by the 2017 class of the Master’s programme in Museum and Exhibition Studies. In a staged domestic setting, they interweave socially relevant themes with objects from Oldenburg’s university collections. You are warmly invited to question values, roles and your own world views, and to contribute your opinions.
