frei|zeit - Sense and nonsense of the hobby (2022)
Interactive exhibition from 19 March to 2 April 2022
Dates: 19 March to 2 April 2022
Venue: Staustraße 16, Raum auf Zeit
What actually happens when everyone just does whatever they want? Does the utopian vision of a four-day working week, a universal basic income and the perfect work-life balance actually work? And when does a leisure activity actually become a hobby? These are the themes explored in the exhibition “frei|zeit – The Sense and Nonsense of Hobbies”, which runs from 19 March to 2 April 2022 at Raum auf Zeit, Staustraße 16, Oldenburg.
Through six themed sections, the exhibition explores how hobbies have developed historically, the significance they hold in today’s society, and where the line between hobby and addiction lies. It also explores so-called ‘guilty pleasures’ – hobbies that people prefer to keep secret because they feel a little ashamed of them – and the question of the extent to which leisure activities can exclude certain people.
Through the exhibition’s interactive design, visitors are invited to reflect on the importance of leisure time in today’s world and to look beyond the scope of their own hobbies.
The exhibition was curated by nine students from the 2020 class of the Master’s programme in Museum and Exhibition Studies, who, as part of their studies, engaged intensively with curatorial processes – from identifying a theme, through finding a venue and securing financing, to the actual design of the exhibition. The project was supervised by Dr Jutta Moster-Hoos (principal supervisor) and Prof. Dr Karen Ellwanger (co-supervisor).
