Had enough? Minimalism in the wardrobe (2021)
Digital exhibition from 10 March to 24 March 2021
Dates: 10 March to 24 March 2021
Venue: https://genug-ausstellung.de/
Planning and staging an exhibition entirely online during a pandemic – can it really work? The twelve students from the 2019 class of the ‘Museum and Exhibition’ Master’s programme at the University of Oldenburg gave it a go. Decluttering, caring for items and conscious consumption: These are the three textile practices of minimalism. Using wardrobes as a starting point, these concepts are made more tangible. The wardrobes reveal the planning behind a minimalist wardrobe, display worn-out clothing, and illustrate what conscious consumption can look like, thereby highlighting the diversity of minimalism.
The research examined how textile minimalism is practised in everyday life. The interviews conducted for this purpose are featured in the exhibition, including at listening stations. In these excerpts, minimalists talk about their very own approaches to managing their clothes. In addition to the exhibition, the accompanying courses also invite visitors to engage in further discussion. Whether it’s a film and music evening or a group session mending worn-out clothes – there’s something for everyone. The exhibition will be actively curated for two weeks from 10 March 2021, after which the content will remain available at https://genug-ausstellung.de/. The project was supervised by Prof. Dr Heike Derwanz (main supervisor) and Svenja Jessen (co-supervisor).
