Biography
The US-born flautist is one of the most renowned instrumentalists and teachers of her instrument. She initially studied flute with Jack Wellbaum at the University of Cincinnati and chamber music with Peter Kamnitzer before continuing her studies with Aurèle Nicolet at the Freiburg/Breisgau University of Music. She regularly performs as a soloist and chamber musician at leading international festivals in Europe, Asia, the USA and South America. Carin Levine is the 2019 winner of the FEM pin of the German Composers' Association. Carin Levine has been honoured with numerous awards, including the Kranichstein Music Prize for the interpretation of contemporary music. She is also the 2010 culture prize winner of the district of Diepholz (Lower Saxony). Since 2012, she has been an ambassador for the children's hospice "Löwenherz" (Syke, Lower Saxony).
Her search for new developments in music has led to close collaboration with composers (such as Peter Ablinger, Violeta Dinescu, Brian Ferneyhough, Keiko Harada, Toshio Hosokawa, Klaus Huber, Mauricio Kagel, David Lang, Alvin Lucier, Liza Lim, Brigitta Muntendorf, Younghi Pagh-Paan, Robert HP Platz, Giacinto Scelsi, Charlotte Seither and Dieter Schnebel), who have dedicated numerous pieces to her. The flautist attaches particular importance to co-operation with young composers. New works have also been created here. To date, Carin Levine has premièred over 1000 works of new music.
Carin Levine taught for many years at the music academies in Bremen, Detmold, Hamburg and Lübeck as well as at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music. She currently gives masterclasses at German music academies such as the Musikakademie Rheinsberg, the Landesmusikakademie Niedersachsen and worldwide. In 2013/14, she supervised the New Music degree programme for flute at the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts. In 2015/16, she led the New Music for Students project at the University of Music Weimar.
She is the editor of the series "Contemporary Music for Flute" at Bärenreiter Verlag, where her book "The Techniques of Flute Playing" was also published. The continuation of her work with practical instructions for composers and performers can be found in a further publication "The Techniques of Flute Playing Volume 2" for piccolo, alto and bass flutes, also published by Bärenreiter.
Carin Levine has worked with conductors such as Ernest Bour, Peter Eötvös, Johannes Kalitzke, Christoph Poppen and Lothar Zagrosek on ensemble and orchestral works. Numerous radio and television recordings and CDs document her extensive repertoire. Her busy concert schedule at home and abroad has taken her to the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, II International Music Festival Phnom Penh, Ansbach Bach Festival, Archipel Festival (Geneva), Venice Biennale, Warsaw Autumn, Musica Viva (Munich), Wien Modern. Over 40 CDs document her musical career.
