Three more hospitals support medical training

As the number of students grows, so does the number of practical training centres: University Medicine Oldenburg accepts hospitals in Papenburg, Wildeshausen and Varel as academic teaching hospitals.

University Medicine Oldenburg has added Marien Hospital Papenburg, Johanneum Wildeshausen and St. Johannes Hospital Varel, which belongs to Friesland Kliniken, to its network of academic teaching hospitals. Medical students from Oldenburg can now also complete their block placements and the practical year at the end of their studies there in order to learn the necessary clinical skills in practice.

This means that eight hospital operators are now part of the network: Borromäus Hospital Leer, Christliches Krankenhaus Quakenbrück, Krankenhaus Johanneum, Ludmillenstift Meppen, Marien Hospital Papenburg Aschendorf, Friesland Kliniken with its sites in Sanderbusch and now also Varel, Ubbo-Emmius Klinik in East Friesland and Karl-Jaspers-Klinik with its non-university departments.

"With 120 students, our need for clinical-practical training opportunities in hospitals has also increased significantly. We are therefore delighted that we have been able to add three new academic teaching hospitals from the region to our network," says Hans Gerd Nothwang, Dean of School V - School of Medicine and Health Sciences. For the students, the stays in the teaching hospitals are not only an indispensable part of their training, but also an insight into the various career opportunities in the region.

In order to become an academic teaching hospital, facilities must fulfil special requirements and prove, for example, that the medical staff have the necessary specialist expertise and teaching qualifications and that the facility has the infrastructure required for teaching.

The cooperation between University Medicine Oldenburg and the teaching hospitals has been contractually regulated. The parties thus enter into a partnership in teaching, patient care and research. For example, it is expressly envisaged that doctors in training at the teaching hospitals will take on teaching assignments at the university and also cooperate in scientific projects.

The network of academic teaching hospitals has been in place since the first Oldenburg students started their practical year in 2018. It complements the practical training opportunities offered by University Medicine Oldenburg in its partner hospitals at Klinikum Oldenburg, Evangelisches Krankenhaus Oldenburg, Pius-Hospital Oldenburg and Karl-Jaspers-Klinik.
