Ms Bartels, what fascinates you about your work?

I love supporting young people as they embark on their careers. The FWJ is, after all, an important bridge between school, university or vocational training. At the university, they can gain experience without having to worry about making mistakes. The best part for me is seeing how they grow as individuals.

What exactly do you do?

I’m the first point of contact for the volunteers outside their working groups. Whether it’s about something organisational or if they have something on their mind, I advise and support them as best I can. I also organise training days, which bring all the FWJ participants together. We carry out team-building activities and hone their personal and professional skills. It’s important to me to create an atmosphere of trust within the group, where everyone feels at ease and can be themselves.

Would a Voluntary Academic Year have been something for you too?

Yes and no (laughs). Actually, I did a Voluntary Social Year 20 years ago. So, voluntary service – definitely. But my heart lies in education. In my current role, I’m doing exactly what I want to do: supporting people during formative stages of their lives.

What qualities help you in this role?

Above all, patience. You mustn’t let yourself get stressed if something goes wrong or takes longer than expected. I think this is particularly important when dealing with young people for whom working life is still new. Fortunately, my colleagues keep telling me that I do have that patience.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time when you’re not working for the university?

I have a daughter with whom I spend a lot of time. I’m also passionate about baking, which my colleagues regularly get to enjoy. Whether it’s a Pilates class through the university sports programme or a visit to the gym, I can switch off mentally and recharge my batteries at the same time.
