Lectures and workshops
Workshop: Property according to Marx
24/25 January 2020
Whether climate change and the energy transition, the future of the working society, unconditional basic income, digitalisation and copyright: the logic, consequences and justification of modern property relations are at the centre of today's groundbreaking political issues. To a certain extent, their analysis forms the centrepiece of Marx's critique of political economy. The extent to which it is relevant and to what extent it could enrich the current debates on intellectual property, ownership of natural resources, etc. will be discussed at the conference together with Urs Lindner, Sabine Nuss, Christian Schmidt, Tilo Wesche and Gabriel Wollner.
Venue: University of Oldenburg

Lecture with PD Dr Jan Gerber
29 April 2019, 6 pm
Karl Marx in Paris. The discovery of communism
His first stay in Paris from 1843 to 1845 was groundbreaking for Karl Marx, as it was during this time that he developed the central concepts of his thought: in his lecture, Jan Gerber will show how Karl Marx arrived in Paris as a radical democrat and left the city as a convinced class fighter and communist. In addition to presenting the sources of Marx's concept of class and communism, he will examine the viability of these concepts in light of the social developments of the 19th century and, above all, the crimes against humanity of the 20th century.
Jan Gerber has been a research associate at the Simon Dubnow Institute since 2009 and has held a senior position since 2010. He heads the research department "Politics" and the research group "A New History of the Labour and Trade Union Movement".
