Research
The University of Oldenburg and the University of Groningen have enjoyed close co-operation for over 40 years. Numerous joint research projects have already been carried out. One notable example is the international Research Training Group “Neurosensory Science, Systems and Applications”, which was funded by the DFG and NWO from 1999 to 2009. Since the establishment of University Medicine Oldenburg in 2012, cross-border research activities in the fields of medicine and health sciences have been consolidated even more closely.
Project selection
Numerous other research collaborations have already been established (funded, among others, by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Programme, INTERREG, the DFG and the MWK), and further ones are in the pipeline. To this end, researchers from Oldenburg and Groningen also have the opportunity to apply for funding from the ‘research pool’ of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Furthermore, researchers from Oldenburg and Groningen are pooling their expertise to offer joint events for early-career researchers and students.
Meet and Collab: Cooperation platform
The platform strengthens the research partnership between University Medicine Oldenburg and the University Medical Centre Groningen and promotes cooperation in the German-Dutch border region. It creates a common space to make networks visible, find partners and develop new research projects. Here you can discover co-operations, make contacts and exchange ideas on topics such as AI in medicine, medical data and innovative patient care.
Cross-Border Institute
2018 also saw the launch of the Cross-Border Institute of Healthcare Systems and Prevention. In this joint project, the Department of Health Services Research in Oldenburg and the Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health in Groningen are pooling their expertise to examine the Dutch and German healthcare systems from different perspectives.
Double doctorate (joint doctoral degree)
The University of Oldenburg offers PhD students the opportunity to undertake a binational PhD programme. This enables them to study and conduct research at two different locations within an international context. Doctoral students enrol at both the University of Oldenburg and an international partner university, conducting research in equal measure at both locations. Supervision during the research phase is provided jointly by both institutions, and upon successful completion, a joint (not duplicate) degree is awarded.
