About the commission and the dates

Habilitation and Transferral of Habilitation

Habilitation

The habilitation serves as proof of outstanding aptitude for independent academic research and qualified independent teaching in a specific academic subject or field (teaching qualification). With the habilitation, the habilitated person is authorised to teach independently at the University of Oldenburg for a specific academic subject or subject area (teaching authorisation). The Privatdozentin or Privatdozent is obliged to carry out free-of-charge titular teaching within his or her subject area to the extent of two teaching hours per academic year.

The procedure and the necessary requirements are regulated by the university-wide habilitation regulations. For School VI Medicine and Health Sciences, additional subject-specific provisions apply, which are regulated in Annex 1 of the regulations.

Habilitation regulations in the Official Notices

If you are interested in a habilitation at School VI Medicine and Health Sciences, please contact the office in good time. We will be happy to assist you with the formalities of the habilitation procedure.

Before submitting the habilitation application, a counselling interview with a member of the Standing Habilitation Commission should be held to clarify any questions regarding the habilitation procedure. To arrange an appointment, please send an email to:

Advice from the Standing Habilitation Committee

Before submitting the application for a habilitation, a consultation must be held with a member of the Standing Habilitation Committee. This may take place whilst the habilitation thesis is being written and serves to clarify any questions regarding the thesis and the habilitation procedure in general.

Writing the habilitation thesis

The requirements for the written habilitation thesis are set out in Section 5 of the Habilitation Regulations in conjunction with Annex 1. Please also note the Supplementary Recommendations of the Standing Habilitation Commission on the preparation of the written habilitation thesis.

The academic lecture, open to the university community, lasts 30 minutes and relates to the subject area for which the habilitation is being sought. The candidate for habilitation shall propose three possible topics to the Habilitation Commission in advance, which together demonstrate sufficiently broad knowledge of the subject area. The Commission shall perform the selection and inform the candidate accordingly. (see § 11 of the Habilitation Regulations). The lecture is followed by a colloquium open to the university community, lasting a maximum of 30 minutes, for academic discussion of the lecture.

Please note that, in justified exceptional cases and with the consent of the candidate, the Habilitation Committee may decide to hold the lecture and the subsequent colloquium, both open to the university community, electronically.
