Mentoring in medicine – support on the path to a research and clinical career
Mentoring is a key component in the successful development of students and researchers in the early stages of their medical careers. It combines experience, knowledge and personal support to help individuals achieve their career goals – from the first week of the semester right through to a professorship.
Our university offers a comprehensive mentoring programme that provides targeted support at every stage of a career – with specialised programmes for students, PhD candidates, postdocs and female doctors in clinical practice.
For women in academia in particular, mentoring plays a crucial role in counteracting the so-called ‘leaky pipeline’ – the steady decline in the proportion of women as academic qualifications increase. Through targeted guidance and networking, barriers are broken down and equal opportunities are promoted.
Mentoring fosters long-term networks – and both sides benefit equally: from experience, exchange and mutual inspiration.
