Oldenburg's university history remembered

Oral history project
Oldenburg's university history remembered

Contemporary witnesses talk about the early decades of Carl von Ossietzky University

In 2024, the University of Oldenburg (UOL) will look back on 50 years of existence. For the University Archives as the university's historical memory, this is a welcome opportunity to focus on the eventful development phase of the university up to the mid-1990s as part of an oral history project.

To this end, we are conducting biographical interviews based on key questions with people who accompanied the development of the UOL in the first 25 years or so and, as contemporary witnesses, are expanding our knowledge of the university's history in a specific way through oral tradition. Members of all university status groups have their say. It is about their impressions of the development of the UOL as a whole, but also about their individual biographical paths at the university.

The focus of interest is on aspects that had a decisive influence on the first decades of the UOL and still characterise the university today, such as the social relevance formulated in the 1973 university charter and the resulting practical orientation in research and teaching. However, conflicts and problems during the start-up phase, such as the unstable planning commitments of the state of Lower Saxony, the dispute over the name or the relationship with Oldenburg as a city, which only improved over the years, are also discussed. In addition, in the sense of an everyday and cultural history of the University of Oldenburg, it is also about impressions of daily work, study and life on campus over the course of time.

Would you like to find out more about the research project? Or would you even like to share your memories with us? We look forward to hearing from you
