The University Archives Oldenburg operates on the basis of interlocking laws and regulations that govern the rights and obligations of the archive:

• The regulations governing the establishment, operation and use of the University Archive of the University of Oldenburg were adopted by the Presidential Board of the University on 7 June 2016(Official Notices / 35th year - 2/2016).
• The University of Oldenburg's Instructions on the Retention, Archiving and Destruction of Written Material (14/06/18) clarify the retention periods for written material produced at the university and the cooperation between the university's institutions and the University Archives
• The Lower Saxony Archives Act (NArchG) stipulates (Section 7 (3) sentence 3) that university archives take the place of the State Archives of Lower Saxony in their area of responsibility with regard to the identification and transfer of archive material and with regard to the preservation of archive material (Sections 3 and 4 NArchG).

• The University Archives Oldenburg includes the pre-archival records management, which is regulated in the Records Regulations for the Lower Saxony State Administration.
