Factorizations of Principal Bundles - An Invitation to a Research Program

Abstract: Formulations of gauge gravity often carry a composite structure. I study such structures as factorizations of principal bundles into composites of bundle projections. Unconstrained they are wild but a gauge group acting transitively on the total space forces a canonical composite of quotients by nested closed subgroups. This holds when spacetime diffeomorphisms count as gauge and fails for vertical automorphisms alone. Categorically the factorizations of a bundle of fixed length form a preorder. Longer factorization form the horizontal nerve of the double category of short factorizations so longer factorizations are reconstructed from shorter ones. Section spaces are indexed by short factorizations and refinement becomes a relative lifting problem. The structural implications are features of the ambient pair of a category and a class of morphisms from which the research program evolves to organize formulations of gauge gravity.
