Beschreibung

Given its focus on both print media and film, this course will study two texts and their adaptations into film in particular: Solomon Northup’s nineteenth century Twelve Years a Slave (1853), which was adapted into film by the British film director Steve McQueen in 2013; and Toni Morrison’s twentieth century neo-slave narrative Beloved (1987), which was adapted into film by the American director Jonathan Demme in 1998. The course thus examines cultural representations of the history of US-American slavery and its afterlife by placing Black men’s and women’s narrations at the center. At the same time, a study of the adaptations of these Black narratives into film involves paying close attention to the media-specific ways of representation as well as the late twentieth-century and twenty-first-century sociocultural concerns that shape them. There is no preferred edition that needs to be purchased for this course; students can purchase any affordable edition and film version. A syllabus and details regarding the requirements about the active participation will be made available on Stud.IP before the class starts.
