Working with a disability and/or chronic illness at the university

Working with a disability and/or chronic illness at the university

A disability and/or chronic illness can be associated with many challenges in everyday (working) life. The university is committed to creating the best possible working conditions for its employees. If you work at the university with a (severe) disability and/or chronic illness, you will find information and contact points here that can support you in your day-to-day work.

Who can help me with general questions and problems in connection with my severe disability? Where can I find support?

If you have general questions, problems or concerns relating to your severe disability, you can contact the Inclusion Team at the University of Oldenburg. The Inclusion Team is made up of a member of the Representative for Employees with Disabilities and the Staff Council as well as the Inclusion Officer. You can find the contact details on the left-hand side.

In accordance with the Inclusion Agreement, the Inclusion Team is responsible, among other things, for publicising the topic of inclusion at the university and tries to provide support in the event of problems in order to find the best possible solution.

I have a severe disability or equal opportunities and need my workplace to be adapted to my needs.

The Representative for Employees with Disabilities and the AGBS staff unit can offer you advice on the technical adaptation of your workplace. In individual cases, the company doctor can also be consulted. In addition, the responsible rehabilitation organisation (e.g. the Integration Office) can be involved in advising on design and financing issues.

Due to my (severe) disability or a (chronic) illness, I have been absent for a longer period of time. Where can I find support when I return to university?

Company integration management (BEM) can support you in the event of prolonged or repeated incapacity for work. It is an offer that is aimed at all employees who have been unfit for work for an uninterrupted period of twelve months or for at least six weeks in total. Specifically, it is a confidential counselling service. In this context, we discuss together which measures or changes could be useful to support the person in their everyday working life or on their way back to work. It is irrelevant whether the illness is directly related to the workplace.

I have a severe disability (or have equal opportunities to a severely disabled person). What funding or support options does the university offer me?

  • If shorter working hours are necessary due to the nature or severity of the disability, people with a severe disability or equal opportunities are entitled to part-time employment (provided the reasons stated in Section 164 (4) sentence 3 SGB IX do not speak against this).
  • In justified cases, it is possible to postpone the core or regular working hours or to define a working time frame (provided that official interests permit).
  • Persons with a severe disability can be released from overtime on request.
  • If there are no opportunities to participate in a recognised rehabilitation or functional sports group within the framework of flexible working hours, time off may be granted in individual cases.

I have a (severe) disability and/or chronic illness. What sports facilities are available to me at the university?

University sports offers a broad programme with over 100 types of sport and exercise. There is also a fitness centre as well as the university pool and sauna, inviting you to switch off from everyday working and studying life.

The programme is aimed at all employees and students of the university - regardless of any health impairment or disability. University sports also endeavour to make participation possible in individual cases. If you have any special needs, please do not hesitate to contact the university sports team! You can find a contact person on the university sports website.

Inclusion agreement in accordance with § 166 SGB IX

In August 2022, an inclusion agreement was concluded between the Presidential Board, the Representative for Employees with Disabilities and the Staff Council, which sets out goals and regulations for the recruitment and employment of people with a severe disability or equal opportunities.

An action plan containing measures to promote accessibility and inclusion was also adopted.
