“What on earth are you playing all the time?” It’s a question that some parents and carers of children and young people find themselves asking, at the very latest, when pocket money has once again been spent on top-up cards in the supermarket or in app stores. Or when nasty surprises turn up on the mobile phone bill. The pressure to waste money and time is a deliberate tactic used by game publishers. Known in technical jargon as ‘dark patterns’, these are deliberately used to manipulate human behaviour. The talk is aimed at anyone who wants to recognise these mechanisms and learn about effective ways to protect themselves – such as technical settings and educating minors. As well as the expert input, there will be time for your questions.
