Group exercise room
The training room in the gait laboratory offers plenty of space for group training sessions and is specifically designed to meet the needs of older people. The non-slip rubber flooring ensures a secure footing and can reduce the risk of injury in the event of a fall. The versatile range of equipment allows for varied balance and strength training. For balance training, equipment such as balance cushions and therapy gyroscopes are available. Small bags, balls and gymnastic sticks also enable dual-task exercises, in which two tasks are performed simultaneously. This is particularly relevant for older people, as everyday life often involves dealing with several demands at the same time. For strength training, dumbbells in various weight categories, medicine balls and Therabands are available. A key focus is on strengthening the leg muscles, which play a vital role in enabling people to carry out everyday movements safely and independently. The Borg scale is used to tailor the training intensity to each individual’s needs. It ranges from 6 (‘not at all strenuous’) to 20 (‘maximum exertion’) and allows for an assessment of the subjectively perceived level of exertion.
The group training room is currently used primarily as part of the iSeFallED study. Here, participants train together under professional supervision. 60-minute training sessions take place several days a week, during which targeted exercises to improve strength and balance are carried out. The aim is, as part of secondary prevention following a fall resulting in a visit to A&E, to maintain and improve mobility and safety in everyday life, thereby preventing further falls.
