Peter von Danckelmann:
The Phoenician Image in the Old Testament
The work utilises the source material handed down in the writings of the Old Testament, which provides an overview of the cities of the Levant coast that are regarded today as "Phoenician", in particular Sidon and Tyre. In addition to the classification of the Phoenicians in the prehistoric table of peoples, the focus is primarily on the partly synoptic episodes concerning Solomon and the Tyrian king Hiram from the 1st and 2nd Book of Kings and Chronicles as well as the lamentations of Ezekiel and the Book of Isaiah. Particular attention is paid to textual criticism, which is based on a comparison of the author's own translation with various current Bible translations and exegetical commentaries. The material thus obtained is then compared and contrasted with the findings of more recent research literature in order to clarify the emergence and transformation of the "Phoenician image" and to explain it on a case-by-case basis.
