Spheres of the public sphere in state socialism

Spheres of the public sphere in state socialism

This research focus is dedicated to the diverse manifestations of the public sphere in Soviet-style societies. The viability of a flexible concept of the public sphere is tested on the basis of studies on the Soviet Union and East Central Europe. A heterogeneous and multi-layered picture of the manifestations and developments of different spheres of the public sphere emerges. It becomes clear that a contrast with the bourgeois model of the public sphere that merely points out deficits is not suitable for analysing state socialist rule. As part of the research focus, the social relevance of public spheres in Soviet states will be analysed from the internal perspective of various case studies. In the comparative synopsis, however, more general structures of the public sphere in Soviet systems will also be analysed
