Wilhelmshaven. "Meereswelten 2016" celebrated a successful premiere in Wilhelmshaven. Around 2500 visitors experienced a day of science up close. For the first time, nine institutes from research, teaching and environmental education opened their doors together and offered a large marine programme. The event was part of the Science Year 2016*2017 - Seas and Oceans organised by the BMBF, which took part with its summer campaign "My mobile coastal laboratory".

The organisers included the Senckenberg Research Institute by the Sea, the Institute of Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) at the University of Oldenburg, the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea Visitor Centre, Jade University, the Aquarium, the Institute for Bird Research, the Lower Saxony Institute for Historical Coastal Research, the Wadden Sea National Park and the joint Wadden Sea Office. In addition to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), MARUM and the Wachholtz publishing house were also involved as co-operation partners.

The numerous visitors used the "Marine Worlds" as a welcome opportunity to experience research up close. They were able to visit research laboratories, feed North Sea animals and marvel at equipment used on ships to take water and sediment samples. The numerous hands-on activities on the Science Mile on the south beach, which connected the institutes, were particularly tailored to the younger audience.
