MS Wissenschaft docks in Oldenburg
06-08 JULY 2016 - ICBM
The exhibition ship MS Wissenschaft, a floating science centre, will be stopping off at Oldenburg harbour on its tour from Wednesday, 6 July to Friday, 8 July. It will dock at the Employment Agency. The Institute of Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) at the University of Oldenburg will accompany the three-day visit of the MS Wissenschaft at the jetty (at the level of house no. 54) with a programme on marine topics.
The MS Wissenschaft is being sent on tour by Wissenschaft im Dialog on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research during the Science Year 2016*2017.
On board, there is a 600 square metre exhibition about the fascinating world of the seas and oceans, which is open daily from 10 am to 7 pm. In addition to many other exhibits, the exhibition includes an interactive globe from the Institute of Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM), which traces the path of marine species into new habitats.
Five working groups introduce themselves to the public and present current research focuses. The Wadden Sea Learning Laboratory is aimed at younger visitors. Here, students offer small experiments on animals and plants in the Wadden Sea. Older schoolchildren can find out about study opportunities in the field of marine sciences at the ICBM at the exhibition stand.
The ICBM exhibition container is located just a few hundred metres away within sight of the MS Wissenschaft (at the jam/entrance area to the harbour). This is a replica of the upper part of a permanent measuring station, which is located south-west of Spiekeroog in the Wadden Sea. The container is open to visitors during this time. Inside there is a poster exhibition that illustrates the teaching and research work at the ICBM. Small films about the ICBM are also shown.
Visitors who are interested in research boats also have the opportunity to take a look at the "Zephyr". It is part of the ICBM's research fleet and is small, manoeuvrable and fast. With a draught of just 30 centimetres, it is particularly suitable for use in the low water of the Wadden Sea and near the coast.
