10 years of SONNE

On July 11, 2014, the research vessel SONNE was christened by the then German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Friends of the SONNE sent congratulations and their special SONNE moments to mark the 10th birthday of our research vessel SONNE:

Greetings from the birthday girl RV SONNE and her crew from the dry dock in Singapore. Just in time for her birthday in a fresh dress.

For exactly ten years, the SONNE has stood for top-level marine research: as a research laboratory floating on the world's oceans, it contributes, among other things, to gaining insights into climate change, advancing the protection of marine ecosystems and investigating the use of marine resources. SONNE is an example of the great importance that climate and marine research has for us as a coastal state. I am all the more pleased that we as the state of Lower Saxony are making important contributions to German marine research. My congratulations go not only to the SONNE and her crew, but also to Wilhelmshaven as the home port of the SONNE and in particular to the home institute of the deep-sea research vessel - the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment.
