Career Paths in Marine and Climate Sciences

Graduate Symposium "Career Paths in Marine and Climate Sciences"

On 23 May 2014, a career day for doctoral students in the marine and climate sciences took place at the Haus der Wissenschaft in Bremen. The graduate symposium was organised by doctoral students and coordinators of various Graduate Schools and doctoral programmes from Bremen, Bremerhaven and Oldenburg.

Over 100 young German and international scientists from various disciplines took part in "Career Paths in Marine and Climate Sciences". They were mainly interested in finding out about careers outside of academic research.

The career day offered an exciting programme with 19 presentations by speakers from the fields of business, science, administration, politics, journalism and non-governmental organisations, among others. All presentations were followed by lively discussions and questions. In addition, participants had the opportunity to exchange ideas with individual speakers in small group discussions ("round tables").

In their initial reactions, participants praised the high quality of the contributions and the successful mix of speakers from different academic appointments. The symposium was supported by the Nordwest-Verbund Meeresforschung e.V.
