Rapid technological developments over the last decade or two have made it possible to quickly access the complete genetic information (genome) of a wide variety of living organisms. Genomes form the blueprint of life. However, it is the totality of all proteins (proteome) that brings an organism to life.

Proteomics - a young, dynamically developing field of research in the life sciences - allows completely new insights into the interplay of the active building blocks of life in environmental research, biomedicine and biotechnology and is a key technology in systems biology.
