The ARBI computers can also be accessed outside the university. If you already have Internet access, you can use the Internet protocols Telnet, SSH and FTP to establish connections for working in TTY mode (Telnet) or for data transfer (FTP). Suitable programmes must be available on your own computer.

The name of the computer for establishing the connection must usually be specified as a 'Fully Qualified Domain Name' (FQDN). E.g. orkan.Computing Science.Uni-Oldenburg.DE. In special cases it may also be necessary to enter the IP address of the target computer. The IP addresses of the most important ARBI computers can be looked up in the /etc/hosts file or queried using the Domain Name System (DNS) query programmes (host, nslookup, dig).

It is also possible to work with a remote X display outside the ARBI. To do this, the environment variable DISPLAY must be set to the name of the X display used. An FQDN must also be specified here. E.G.

export DISPLAY=kiste.studentenwohnheim.uni-oldenburg.de:0

(in ksh, bash syntax). A suitable X-Display programme (X-Server) on your own computer is of course necessary.
