PD Dr Irini Vassilaki

Dr Irini Vassilaki specialises in the fields of IT law, criminal law and legal informatics.
From 1993 to 2001, she devoted most of her time to research and university teaching. She has lectured at the Law Schools of the Universities of Hanover, Göttingen and Münster, among others. Since 2002, she has been a private lecturer at the School of Law at the University of Göttingen (venia legendi: criminal procedure law, legal informatics and media criminal law). She received a scholarship from the German Research Foundation (DFG) to prepare her habilitation.
Since completing her habilitation, Dr Vassilaki has been working as a legal advisor again and was admitted to the Munich Regional Court as a European lawyer from 2001 to 2006. She worked at the law firm Görling Rechtsanwälte until 2004 and at the law firm Jones Day from 2004 to 2006.
Since 2007 she has been a managing partner of the law firm "Vassilaki Rechtsanwälte LLP" in Athens.
She was Head of the Legal Service at the Ministry of Finance - Department of Information Systems, Legal Advisor at the Greek Parliament and Legal Advisor at the Greek Social Democratic Party.
Dr Vassilaki is a member of various international bodies. For example, she has been a permanent member of the EU's Legal Advisory Board, which deals with information law issues, since 1988. From 1988 to 1990 she was a member of the "Select Committee of Experts on Computer-Related Crime" at the Council of Europe and from 1992 to 1995 a scientific expert of the "Committee of Experts on Problems of Criminal Procedural Law".
Dr Vassilaki is involved in various research projects. She has been a research advisor at the Greek Institute of Foreign and International Law in Athens since 1990, a member of the BMF's RION project (Legal Informatics on the Net) since 2001, where she is responsible for the criminal law section, and participates in the Socrates/Erasmus programme.
Dr Vassilaki has also been a permanent contributor to the journal "The Computer Law and Security Report" since 1993, a correspondent for the journal "Computer und Recht" since 1997, a permanent contributor to the journal "Kommunikation und Recht" since 2000, a member of the editorial board of the journal "Recht der Datenverarbeitung" since 2001 and co-editor of the journal "IT-Rechts-Berater" since 2002. With her thirty years of international experience in information law and over 100 publications, she is one of the pioneering lawyers in this field.
Dr Vassilaki's native language is Greek; she is fluent in German, English, French and Italian and has a basic knowledge of Dutch and Spanish.
