Overcoming developments such as diversity, digitalisation and artificial intelligence together: That is the aim of the "Oldenburg Teacher Training Day" (TOLL). It will take place for the first time on 1 October.
A forum for dialogue for all phases of teacher training - this is what the "Oldenburg Teacher Training Day" (TOLL) offers. It will take place on Tuesday, 1 October, from 8.45 am to 3.30 pm on the topic of "How do we want to teach and learn in the future?" in the Lecture Hall Centre (Building A 14). As a think tank, the new event format is intended to generate impulses for the education system and strengthen the north-west as an educational region. Interested parties can register online until 18 September.
"Current developments such as diversity, digitalisation and artificial intelligence are changing the school system. This makes it all the more important to promote transfer and exchange between all teacher training institutions - universities, teacher training colleges and schools," says Dr Julia Michaelis, Managing Director of the University's Centre for Teacher Training - Didactic Centre (DiZ). TOLL is therefore aimed equally at people from schools, universities, teacher training centres and further education, and addresses both teachers and learners.
It offers participants a special space to discuss perspectives and implementation options for current educational topics, as well as to provide and gain valuable insights into case studies and methods. "With some developments, it is the teachers in schools who feel the change first, with others it is the researchers and teachers at universities. Basically, they are all equally seekers and testers on the dynamic courses of developments in innovative learning and teaching. TOLL aims to bring together all three phases of teacher training in a synergetic and profitable way. In Oldenburg, we want to live the exchange between the phases in real life," is how TOLL coordinator Dr Verena Niesel characterises the event format.
TOLL offers a wide selection of workshops
TOLL begins with a keynote speech by Myrle Dziak-Mahler, education expert and Managing Director of the lernlog initiative in Bonn, on the topic of "Confidence and the will to face the future: Mastering challenges, gaining security". This will be followed by a selection of five in-depth workshops in two time slots (10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and 1.30 p.m. to 3.30 p.m.). They each include contributions from all phases of teacher training and cover topics such as "Artificial intelligence in teaching and learning", "Relationships and roles in the relationship between teaching and learning", "Intercultural teaching and learning communities" and "Teaching and learning out of the box".
For example, students will report on their experiences from an inclusive seminar in which they realised an art project with people with disabilities as a joint learning group. A secondary school from Wilhelmshaven presents how its pupils learn independently and in a self-organised way, detached from traditional teaching structures, accompanied by teachers in the role of learning guides with an increased focus on relationships and support. A vocational school uses the example of its innovative, immersive and interactive learning environment to show how pupils' communication skills can be trained in a more individualised and effective way with the help of virtual reality and artificial intelligence. The regional state office provides insights into the wealth of possible digital tools that are available for schools and study programmes in Lower Saxony.
TOLL is an initiative of the DiZ and the Centre of Excellence for Regional Teacher Training at the University of Oldenburg. The Universitätsgesellschaft Oldenburg e.V. supports the event. In the coming years, TOLL will be organised on a regular basis. To this end, all those involved in teacher training in Oldenburg are asked to submit ideas and suggestions for topics for the next TOLL and to implement them together with the DiZ.
