Maths specialist day - basic skills in maths lessons in grades 1-6

1 September 2026 in Oldenburg

Basic mathematical skills in arithmetic form the foundation for successful learning in maths lessons. Essentially, it is about developing a solid understanding of numbers and operations, which should be laid down in primary school and further developed in secondary school. This understanding determines whether children use and develop arithmetic relationships or whether their gaps in understanding become entrenched, preventing them from gaining deeper mathematical insights.

The symposium focuses on these basic skills and combines the perspectives of primary and secondary education. At the centre are not only theoretical classifications, but also practical approaches to diagnosis and support that can be transferred to your own lessons.

Democracy Camp 2026- 70 pupils discuss democracy and opportunities for co-determination at the OFZ

On 11 March, the OFZ hosted special guests in the form of the Democracy Camp. Around 70 pupils from years 7-11 and 15 teachers discussed the importance of democracy for themselves and our society in five communicative and co-operative workshops. For the pupils, the focus was on the self-effective shaping of democratic processes, with the emphasis on working together on social and political issues. With great commitment, the pupils discussed topics such as "I, you, us - experiencing democracy " or " I see something you don't see: perceiving diversity " or reflected on how the spread of fake news and disinformation via social media influences their own democratic decisions. The teachers had time to exchange ideas with colleagues at the teachers' café and also received further suggestions for implementing political education in everyday school life.

In conclusion, we can say that The Democracy Camp was a great day and everyone took home many opportunities for action to bring democracy to life - at school, among friends and in society. Or as one pupil said: "I felt really good here and thought it was great that we were able to express our opinions and listen to what others had to say. This day was very important for me."

The OFZ would like to thank all cooperation partners(Peer Leader International, Deichdenker Institute, MyGatekeeper and Education Innovation Lab) for their uncomplicated and committed cooperation as well as the NLQ for its financial support of the democracy camp.

MINT Lounge 2026 - further education in dialogue

On Thursday, 12 March 2026, the Association for the Promotion of Mathematics and Science Teaching (MNU) is hosting the MINT Lounge at the Lower Saxony Study Institute, Rosenstraße 14-16, Oldenburg. The training afternoon is aimed at students, trainee teachers and young teachers and offers space for dialogue, networking and practical inspiration.

The concept of the MINT Lounge deliberately focuses on peer-to-peer learning: in short speed dates, trainee teachers present tried-and-tested teaching ideas, successful experiments or successful teaching units. This format is complemented by workshops organised by experienced colleagues, which enable in-depth discussions on subject-specific and didactic issues.

The combination of compact impulses and intensive workshop work creates a variety of points of reference for your own lessons and at the same time opens up opportunities for personal exchange across school and subject boundaries. The MINT Lounge thrives on the diversity of contributions and openness to new perspectives.

Participation is free of charge for students and trainee teachers. Catering during the event is also free of charge. The MNU Niedersachsen is looking forward to an inspiring afternoon with many stimulating discussions and new impulses for STEM teaching.

You can register here from February.

Dealing constructively with conflicts in everyday school life - school mediation training

Launch in February 2026

Conflicts are part of everyday educational life. Poorly resolved or smouldering conflicts often not only affect individual pupils, but also the entire class and working atmosphere. Mediation is a modern and fair method of conflict resolution. Mediators support disputants as neutral moderators to clarify their dispute through dialogue and find amicable solutions. The rest of the training course is about getting to know the conflict mediator programme and other ways of systematically promoting a culture of conflict in schools. In particular, the training of student mediators/arbitrators, the gradual implementation of mediation as well as social skills training and the class council are covered.

The training comprises 5 blocks of 2 days each and starts in February 2026. The course fee is 1520 euros. Oldenburg schools are eligible for funding from the City of Oldenburg's Prevention Council.

Still have questions? An online information event will take place on 13 January 2026.

You can find more information about the course here.

Cross-sectional task of language education

Diversity, diagnostics and methodological practice - start in February 2026!

In this learning-intensive module series, we take a look at central aspects of language education in schools on each of the six days of the event.

Formal provisions, language education methods, diversity-conscious education, diagnostic skills, multilingual schools - all of this will be developed in line with the participants' school practice.

This series of face-to-face modules includes self-study components on the BISS blended learning platform for teachers. BiSS-Transfer is a joint initiative of the federal and state governments for the transfer of language education, reading and writing promotion in schools and daycare centres.
