Socio-cultural diversity and discrimination in medicine from an intersectional perspective (SoDiMe)

Project description

In view of the increasing visibility of cultural diversity in Germany, including in medicine and healthcare, knowledge about diversity and discrimination in medicine is playing an increasingly important role. Diversity and discrimination are also current and controversial topics in international research. There is an acute need to develop sound knowledge on this topic in the context of the German healthcare system.

Against this background, the project, carried out jointly with Prof. Dr Silke Schicktanz from the University Medical Centre Göttingen, explores the question of what influence awareness of diversity and discrimination has on medicine and healthcare. As there has been little research into the experiences and views of medical professionals on diversity and discrimination to date, the perspectives of medical students in Germany are being analysed. The perspectives of medical students offer insights into both medical care and university education. The participating medical students can express themselves both as those affected and as observers. Against the background of the existing knowledge and problem awareness of medical students with regard to diversity and discrimination and their internal perspective on medical education, the results of the planned study can be used to evaluate and plan anti-discriminatory teaching in medical studies.

Methodological approach

The planned research project chooses an explorative-qualitative approach. To this end, online focus groups will be conducted with students of human medicine. In the focus groups, students will discuss diversity and reflect on how they deal with discrimination in medicine and healthcare. The data collected will then be analysed using a content analysis method from a social science and ethical perspective.
