Music and Power: Practices, Discourses and Institutions (18th–20th centuries)

Concept: Dr Bianca Schumann (University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna) & Dr Clémence Schupp-Maurer (University of Oldenburg)

The workshop is dedicated to exploring the relationships between music and power from the 18th to the 20th century. In this context, power is not understood exclusively as political dominance, but as a relational framework that manifests itself in institutions, discourses, social hierarchies and aesthetic practices. In this sense, music appears both as a vehicle for power and as a space for its reflection and negotiation. The aim of the workshop is to bring together contributions from different historical contexts, geographical areas and methodological approaches in order to systematically examine the diverse interconnections between music and power. Particular focus will be placed on the interactions between musical and cultural practices, institutional structures and social orders.

The workshop will take place on 16–17 March 2027 at the Institute of Music, University of Oldenburg .
