Romanian music in context - typologies of the narrative

The narrative is a characteristic feature of Romanian music. Byzantine music and Romanian traditional music are striking examples of this and sources of inspiration for art music right up to the present day. By analysing various works, we will try to get closer to the narrative dimension in music. This will show that the common source of inspiration can lead to different forms of crystallisation. Romanian music in the context of other cultures and times will open up new perspectives for understanding the phenomenon of music. Of particular interest are those forms of narrativity that are not bound to the word, but are expressed in instrumental works of various genres and instrumentations. Here, it is first of all important to open up a discourse on the extent to which such sound connotations can arise and be understood. The communicative aspect of music plays a decisive role here; it is responsible for the fact that the interaction models in "thinking music", "playing music" and "understanding music" can be in a continuous process of transformation and can thus evoke completely different levels of meaning. Looking at typologies of narrative in Romanian music opens up perspectives on forms of narrative in other cultures and thus provides a starting point for further discourse on the phenomenon of music - across spaces and times.
