Project: Sustainable production and utilisation of cattail on fenland sites in Lower Saxony (RoNNi)
The aim of the project "Sustainable production and utilisation of cattail on fenland sites in Lower Saxony(RoNNi)" is to
- Establishment of large-scale cattail cultivation in two selected model regions in Lower Saxony (LK Emsland, LK Cuxhaven), which represent "hot spots" of high soil-borne greenhouse gas emissions
- Development of quality-optimised production of Typha(T. angustifolia, T. latifolia) for use as a building material and horticultural substrate
- Transformation of the management of drained agricultural fenland into climate-friendly, peatland-preserving wet management through cattail cultivation
- The ecological as well as the economic and socio-economic effects are evaluated
- Mire protection
- climate protection
The core of the project is also the establishment of regional value chains and new business models for the
- Production of peat substitutes for horticulture in cooperation with the local soil industry
- Production of Typha building materials by establishing regional processing co-operations and building material users. For the building products and types of construction developed as part of this project, the necessary legal basis and data for life cycle assessment will be provided. Typha products are used in three demonstration projects and practical experience is gathered. The knowledge gained will be passed on to those involved in construction in further education programmes and to students at universities.
- Rewarding climate performance/generating and marketing regional certificates
Using the example of two particularly suitable fenland regions (Nördliches Emsland /LK EL, Region Geestland/LK Cux), the feasibility is to be demonstrated and utilisation chains established.
