Mission statement for teaching in School II
School II comprises the teaching units Computing Science, Economics, Law and Economics Education. Very successful, predominantly subject-related degree programmes are offered in the School's various subjects. Many programmes are interdisciplinary in nature, combining subjects from the teaching units and beyond the School in an appropriate manner (e.g. Business Administration/Law, Business Administration/Computing Science, Economics/Computing Science, Computing Science/Psychology). In the area of lifelong learning, the School is involved in the degree programmes of the Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L), which are tailored to the special requirements of part-time study.
The regional, national and international labour market has a great demand for graduates of the degree programmes offered by School II. A substantial proportion of graduates are able to enter professional life directly after completing their first professionally qualifying degree. The degree programmes are designed in such a way that they provide the professional expertise needed to start a career, for example in the private sector and public administration institutions as well as in research institutes.
In line with the mission statement of the unity of research and teaching, many degree programmes are geared towards the School's research focus areas, which in turn are coordinated with the University's research focus areas. The results of research are integrated into teaching in many places. This ranges from lectures on current or special topics, to projects on current research topics, to final theses embedded in research projects.
The high demand for the degree programmes is met with appropriate course formats, which include seminars, tutorials and project groups, each with a relatively small number of participants, in addition to large lectures on the fundamentals. The opportunities offered for students to shape their own studies, for example by specialising and setting a focus, contribute to their personal development. Learning processes can be organised and designed independently and autonomously. Various teaching and learning formats incorporate current research topics in the form of research-based learning, which also provides targeted support for young academics at an early stage of their studies.
An international orientation of the study programmes is also promoted. English is the language of instruction in numerous modules, and degree programmes taught purely in English are also offered. International mobility is desired and is offered on the one hand through degree programmes with international co-operations and on the other hand through mobility windows in the degree programmes. This means that stays abroad can be organised individually (e.g. Erasmus programmes).
Students and their elected Student Councils are involved in the further development of their degree programmes through their participation in the three study working groups (Computing Science, Business and Law and IFÖB), the Study Commission of School II and the degree programme conferences within the framework of system accreditation.
The School's two Departments (Computing Science and Business, Economics and Law) maintain close links with the region's business community. Current topics are included in teaching. Joint theses and projects, guest lectures and participation in teaching by "externals" are the result of strong links. This maintains and expands co-operation and communication between science and business, not only in the north-west region.
