Following the enforced break due to the coronavirus pandemic, the UniChor has restarted for the winter semester 21/22 under the direction of Silja Stegemeier.
The choir’s programme is a colourful mix of shorter works from various eras, cultures and genres. Variety is part of the concept, so that all participants can find something to their taste or explore new musical worlds.
As rehearsals only take place during term time, new singers are warmly welcomed at the start of the semester. The choir’s line-up changes slightly from semester to semester. At the end of the semester, there are small public concerts. Regular attendance at rehearsals is therefore essential for the choir to function effectively. Over the few weeks of a semester, the aim is to form a choir that brings together singers with very different abilities and previous experience into a unified ensemble. In such a short time, this is only possible if a consistent group works together. Every member is important and contributes to the overall sound with their voice and personality. The main aim of the rehearsals is to enjoy making music together. Basic vocal technique is an integral part of the choir rehearsals.
After rehearsals, the singers often enjoy going to a pub together.
Anyone affiliated with the University of Oldenburg is welcome to join in, as are members of the wider community. Participation is free of charge. An understanding of musical notation is helpful but not essential. Similarly, whilst we welcome those with previous experience of choral singing, it is also possible to rediscover the joy of singing together here. There is no audition required.
Rehearsals take place on Tuesdays from 6.15 pm to 7.45 pm in the auditorium, Building A11.
