Local Group “Motherhood & Academia”

Kick-off for the Oldenburg local group “Motherhood & Academia”

on November 5 2026 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

at the Intercultural Meeting Place in the SSC (Haarentor Campus)

Dear researchers,

Are you interested in discussing how to balance academic work with caregiving responsibilities?

We’d like to warmly invite you to our first meeting of the “Motherhood & Academia” local group at the University of Oldenburg! We’re an interdisciplinary team of researchers (in collaboration with the Commission for Gender Equality (KFG), the Staff Council, and Family Services) and are supported by Prof. Dr. Gun-Britt Kohler, Vice President for Academic Career Paths, Equal Opportunity, and International Affairs.

We’ll briefly introduce our initiative, and there will be plenty of time to share your own experiences and discuss priorities for the local network’s future work with representatives from the university’s support services.

The event is open to all researchers and teaching staff at the University of Oldenburg and Oldenburg University Medical Center (including all clinics) who are interested in balancing their careers with caregiving responsibilities. Whether you’re a mother, a father, with or without children - everyone is welcome!

We welcome registrations as well as spontaneous participation. To register, ask questions, or express interest in future network meetings, please send an email to:

The network (Motherhood and Academia) is a nationwide - and now also international - network for people engaged with motherhood, care work, and academic careers. It was founded in 2021, and there are now more than 30 local groups in Germany and internationally.

The focus is on the experiences and structural conditions of people with care responsibilities in the academic world. The network explicitly goes beyond the issue of individual work-life balance; it also examines the structures of the academic system itself and advocates for structural change.
