Peer-to-peer strategy consulting of the University Forum on Digitalisation

The peer-to-peer strategy consultation of the Hochschulforum Digitalisierung (HFD) is a development tool for universities for the digitalisation of teaching. It is aimed at university management, but is characterised by the participation of various stakeholders from the university - in particular students and lecturers. The consultation has been held annually since 2017. Prior to the current 2021/22 run, there had already been four rounds with 24 universities and four universities are participating in this 5th year.

UOL was selected as one of these four universities in summer 2021. The Vice President for Studying, Teaching and International Affairs, Prof. Dr Verena Pietzner, explained on the occasion of the selection: ‘All universities must master the challenges of digital transformation. The peer-to-peer strategy consultation is an excellent opportunity to learn from each other and jointly develop ideas for the future of university teaching’.

The Department of Studying and Teaching had already initiated an initial strategy process at the university in 2019. By February 2020, discussions and workshops had been held with over 150 lecturers and students from all faculties to develop needs and ideas on how teaching can be made more innovative through digitalisation. These ideas, as well as the experiences from the coronavirus semesters, will form part of the strategy consultation.

Focus of P2P strategy consulting

The challenges that are considered as part of the strategy consultation and on the consultation days have two thematic focuses.

On the one hand, overarching questions on the further development of digitalisation in teaching are discussed, which address the university management's overall strategic considerations for teaching. This is primarily about shaping the further development of the strategy itself and which strategic issues the University of Oldenburg wants to focus on.

On the other hand, the strategy consultancy is working intensively on the strategic, content-related and spatial conception of a Teaching Lab and a Learning Lab. The Teaching Lab and Learning Lab are intended to create opportunities and spaces for the creative and open development of new teaching and learning scenarios that utilise the possibilities of digital tools for teaching. The establishment and conception of the Teaching Lab and Learning Lab and the testing of new teaching/learning scenarios represent a development area of the participate@UOL project, which is being funded at the UOL from 2021-2024 as part of the ‘Strengthening university teaching through digitalisation’ programme of the Innovation in University Teaching Foundation.

Consultation days - 30 March to 1 April 2022

The core of the P2P strategy consultation will be three consultation days, which will take place on 30 March, 31 March and 1 April 2022. In a variety of discussions and workshops, questions on the strategic development of digital and digitally supported teaching and learning formats will be discussed with various UOL stakeholders.

The consultation days will kick off with discussions between the peer advisors and the HFD with teaching staff and students as well as with the Internal Evaluation department from the Department of Teaching and Learning. The focus here is on exploring the current situation at the UOL and the experiences of lecturers and students from two years of corona-related digital teaching.

We will continue with the first thematic focus - general strategic questions on the digitalisation of teaching and the further design of the strategy process - with the Vice President for Studies, Teaching and International Affairs, Prof. Dr Karsten Speck (until Dec. 2023), and the UOL internal team.

For the Teaching Lab, the staff of the participate@UOL project, the deans of studies and coordinators for studies and teaching of the faculties are involved in the consultation days. During the consultations on the design of the Learning Lab, which is being designed and set up by the library and information system, the peers meet with the head of the library, the head of the Department of Studies and Teaching, the project staff and students.

Finally, the peers, the HFD, the President Prof Dr Ralph Bruder, the then Vice President for Studies, Teaching and International Affairs Prof Dr Karsten Speck and the internal UOL team come together for a summary and initial feedback from the peers.
