Erasmus+ departmental selection criteria
Selection criteria:
The department's criteria for being selected for an Erasmus place are as follows. They will be applied in the order they are listed.
- Current Fachsemester (A) – you will generally need to be in your third or higher semester at the time of application.
- Statement of Motivation – this is particularly important!
- Notenübersicht and general academic performance – the strength of your current grades, particularly in Anglistik/ Amerikanistik.
- If you have missing grades on your transcript from prevous semesters, then please supply these on a separate piece of paper.
- If you have academic achievements (prizes, publications) that are not obvious from your transcript, please include them in either your CV or statement of motivation as appropriate!
- English modules to complete - you need to show EITHER that you have courses in your BA/MEd/MA that you could study in another country, OR be willing to complete courses that cannot be recognised in Oldenburg for the sake of the experience. (There is absolutely no guarantee that you can attend classes in your second subject at our partner universities.
- Willingness to promote Oldenburg as a destination for future Erasmus+ students – please include information about this in your statement of motivation.
- Previous extended stays abroad that would meet the Oldenburg criteria.
- This only applies if all else is equal - priority will then be given to the student who has not yet been abroad.
- Current Fachsemester (B) – for two otherwise equal candidates, the candidate who is further along in their studies receive preference.
- [New as of WiSe25-26] If absolutely all else is equal, the final distribution of places will be decided via a "Losverfahren" among the equally qualified applications.
Further information
The following factors may be taken into consideration when awarding specific Erasmus+ places - the general criteria listed above have to be fulfilled regardless.
- Students whose choice of destination is limited due to circumstances beyond their control may receive priority for specific places. Such circumstances may include but are not limited to:
- Visa restrictions for students with non-German and especially non-EU passports and travel documents
- Medical conditions requiring treatment or resources only available in specific locations
You can receive credit for the compulsory stay abroad in English even if you take up an Erasmus place in a non-English-speaking country as long as the following criteria are met:
- The vast majority (20 ECTS) of the courses you take are taught in English.
- You are not a fluent or background speaker of the language spoken in the country/region of your chosen university (eg. if you speak Czech at home you would not be able to receive credit for a semester at the University of South Bohemia).
AuslandsBAföG
- Whether or not a student receives / will receive AuslandsBAföG does not play a major role in awarding Erasmus+ places except for the University of Limerick - due to the demand for places in English-speaking countries, priority for Limerick only will be given to students who have no other means of funding a stay.
