Bachelor Low German
Since the winter semester 2023/2024, the University of Oldenburg's Institute for German Studies has been offering a Bachelor's degree in Low German. The introduction of the teaching degree programmes Master of Education Haupt-/Realschule Niederdeutsch and Master of Education Gymnasium Niederdeutsch is planned for the winter semester 2026/2027 .
Combination of subjects - Information on enrolment in the Bachelor's degree programme in Low German
The new "Ordinance on Master's Degrees for Teaching Qualifications in Lower Saxony" (MaVo) will soon come into force. Among other things, it regulates the possible combinations of subjects for the teaching profession at schools in Lower Saxony.
Therefore, please note the following information on the combination of subjects when enrolling for the Bachelor's degree programme in Low German, which you are studying as part of the two-subject Bachelor's degree programme with another subject:
- If you are not aiming to become a teacher with your two subjects, but rather to work outside of school, you can combine the Bachelor's degree in Low German with another subject without restriction, as the MaVo only regulates the combinations of subjects for the teaching profession. (Please note, however, that there is no master's degree programme in Low German. However, if you are pursuing an academic career goal, it is possible to follow on from the Bachelor's degree programme in Low German with a master's degree programme in German Studies and, in this context, to focus on courses related to Low German).
- If you are aiming to become a teacher at a Hauptschule or Realschule with your two subjects, there are hardly any restrictions regarding the choice of the second subject (as long as it is a school subject). This is because the MaVo allows almost any combination of subjects for this teaching qualification.
- However, if you are aiming to become a grammar school teacher by studying your two subjects, please note the following: The subject Low German, which is categorised as a combination subject in the MaVo, can only be combined with one core subject: Mathematics, English Studies, Art, Music, Physics (and other subjects not offered in Oldenburg).
Prof. Dr Doreen Brandt is responsible for the Bachelor's degree programme in Low German and for advising students.
