Bachelor Low German
Since the 2023/2024 winter semester, the Institute for German Studies at the University of Oldenburg has been offering a Bachelor’s degree in Low German.
Combination of subjects - Information on enrolment in the Bachelor's degree programme in Low German
The new “Regulation on Master’s Degrees for Teacher Training in Lower Saxony” (MaVo) is due to come into force shortly. Among other things, it sets out the possible combinations of subjects for teacher training at schools in Lower Saxony.
Therefore, when enrolling on the Bachelor’s degree in Low German – which you are studying as part of a two-subject Bachelor’s programme alongside another subject – please note the following information regarding combinations of subjects:
- If you are not aiming for a teaching career with your two subjects, but rather a career outside the school system, you may combine the Bachelor’s degree in Low German with another subject without restriction, as the MaVo only regulates the combinations of subjects for teaching. (Please note, however, that there is no master's degree programme in Low German. If you are pursuing an academic career, you do have the option of following on from the Bachelor’s degree in Low German with a master's degree programme in German Studies, in which case you can focus on modules relating to Low German.)
- If you are aiming to become a teacher at a Hauptschule or Realschule with your two subjects, there are also hardly any restrictions regarding the choice of the second subject (provided it is a school subject). This is because the MaVo permits almost any combination of subjects for this teaching qualification.
- However, if you are studying these two subjects with a view to becoming a teacher at a Gymnasium, please note the following: The subject Low German, which is classified as a combination subject in the MaVo, can only be combined with one core subject: Mathematics, English, Art, Music, Physics (and other subjects not offered in Oldenburg).
Prof. Dr Doreen Brandt is the programme coordinator for the Bachelor’s degree in Low German and is responsible for academic advising on the programme.
