Functional and psychosocial needs of patients of working age during rehabilitation after periprosthetic infection of the knee or hip joint - development of a cross-border, supportive rehabilitation programme
Millions of people around the world undergo joint replacement surgery every year. These are mostly hip or knee joint endoprostheses. In Germany, more hip and knee replacement operations are performed per capita than in many other European countries, such as the Netherlands. It is expected that the number of operations will continue to rise, partly because more and more operations are being performed on younger patients of working age. A significant proportion of patients currently fall into this group, and their share is expected to increase further in the coming years. As retirement age increases, many of these patients will have to cope with their artificial joints for a long time to come. Supporting a good recovery is therefore becoming increasingly important.

Hip-Across - Influence of patient and healthcare system characteristics on outcomes after hip replacement in the border region between Oldenburg and Groningen
Osteoarthritis is a growing problem due to the ageing population, physical inactivity and the increasing prevalence of obesity, among other factors. In patients with symptomatic end-stage hip osteoarthritis, total hip arthroplasty (THA) is usually the treatment of choice to achieve functional improvement and a reduction in OA-related pain. However, there is no international consensus on the most effective rehabilitation approach, which leads to major differences in the rehabilitation concepts of different countries.

How does my neighbour approach osteoarthritis care?
Joint Profile Education course / LFC week SS 2025 (save the date)
Osteoarthritis is the most common chronic joint disease worldwide - and the trend is rising! Risk factors for the disease include older age, female gender, overuse/improper loading and, above all, lifestyle-related factors such as physical inactivity and obesity. To date, curative treatment of osteoarthritis is not possible. In the final stage of the disease with an inadequate response to conservative therapy for at least 6 months, joint replacement surgery is often necessary. The treatment of osteoarthritis, the insertion of the prosthesis and post-operative medical rehabilitation differ considerably between the Netherlands and Germany. What can we learn from our neighbour?
Winter School
The Winter School: "WINT3RSURGE - interdisciplinary & interactive winter school for innovative Surgery, Orthopedics and Anatomy", which will take place this year on 05.01.2024 and 06.01.2024, is a winter school for innovative learning in the fields of anatomy, surgery and orthopaedics. For this purpose, a "circuit training" of the 3 departments will be set up (Anatomy, AVC, Orthopaedics). These are worked on by students in small groups in order to train and refresh surgical and anatomical knowledge and skills. In addition, lectures are given in the "cutting" subjects.
The first day ends with an event for socialising and networking.
At the end of the event, there will be an award ceremony for the best performances at the various stations.
Registration is open for up to 30 students from 3rd year onwards until 22/12/2013 until 12:00.

Robot-assisted surgical system for artificial knee joints
February 2023
"According to statistical surveys, around a quarter of patients who have had an artificial knee joint are not satisfied with the results of their operation. Loosening, infections, restricted movement and pain are often cited as complaints that can significantly limit the quality of life of those affected.
A manually controlled surgical robot, which the University Clinic for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery at Pius Hospital has put into operation under the new management of Prof. Dr Max Ettinger, counteracts this.
The new system enables surgeons to adapt the prostheses to the anatomy of each individual patient with millimetre precision. After the procedure, they are generally more satisfied and recover more quickly."
