Short Report on Joint UOL-RUG Electrocatalysis Workshop at UOL
October 1st 2025

In our workshop, we brought together the expertise of the Chemical Technology 1 at the UOL and Engineering and Technology institute Groningen (ENTEG) of RUG on the topics of Electrocatalysis. The workshop organized and hosted by the Chemical Technology 1 took place on 1st of October 2025 focused on two main topics of electrocatalysis, Electroctatalysts design and Structural characterizations of electrocatalysts. In total, eighteen researchers and students (five from UOL, five from DLR and eight from RUG) attended the workshop, three expert talks were delivered and four PhD students presented their work. The presentations provided an overview of fundamental concepts, recent research trends, and practical aspects of electrocatalyst design and characterisations. Furthermore, the interactive discussions and questions from participants contributed to a very conducive learning atmosphere. As part of the workshop, the attendees had the opportunity to visit research facilities at the Chemical Technology 1 and at Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics, German Aerospace Center (DLR). Laboratory demonstration experiments on photoelectrochemical water oxidation and alkaline water electrolysis were presented to the participants. The visit aimed to highlight the research groups' capabilities and helped participants to identify potential devices and instruments that could be shared in future collaboration. On the second part of our joint workshop, we participated in a session hosted by Dr D. M. Morales at RUG on 16th of October 2025. The workshop focused on electrochemical evaluation of electrocatalysts and advanced operando electrochemical techniques. Afterwards, laboratory visits and demonstrations allowed us to explore research infrastructures dedicated to electrocatalyst research and other areas of catalysis. Overall, the workshops were successful and highlighted several potential areas for future collaborations between the two groups. We thank Dr Julian Lorenz (Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics, German Aerospace Center (DLR)) for organising the laboratory visit and co-hosting the workshop. We very much appreciate the financial support from the University of Oldenburg under the fame work of UOL/RUG funding program.

Sincerely, Dereje H. Taffa
