Successful Launch of the “Meet the Brain” Workshop in Groningen
From October 6–10, 2025, the “Meet the Brain” workshop was held for the first time at the Department of Anatomy at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. The initiative was supported through collaborative funding between Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg and the University of Groningen, highlighting the strong commitment of both institutions to international cooperation in neuroscience education and research.
Four doctoral candidates from the University of Oldenburg were given the unique opportunity to spend a full week in the dissection room of the Anatomical Institute in Groningen, where they studied and dissected human brains. The mornings focused on theoretical instruction: Prof. Dr. Janniko Georgiadis, Head of Anatomy in Groningen, provided comprehensive lectures on various brain regions, emphasizing their functional roles and clinical relevance. The practical sessions were carefully guided step by step, after which participants worked in teams of two to perform the dissections themselves—an experience widely regarded as a highlight of the workshop.
The afternoons were dedicated to scientific exchange and discussion, also with PhD students from Groningen, moderated by Prof. Dr. Mark Hipp (Groningen and Oldenburg). Each participant presented their current research project, followed by lively and constructive discussions that fostered critical thinking and interdisciplinary perspectives. A guided tour of the Core Facility Microscopy at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) was met with great enthusiasm, offering valuable insights into state-of-the-art imaging technologies.
In addition to the intensive academic program, ample time was reserved for informal networking and cultural exchange. Shared afternoons and evenings, including a visit to the city center of Groningen with Prof. Dr. Mark Hipp and Prof. Dr. Anja Bräuer (Oldenburg), provided an excellent setting for strengthening professional relationships in a relaxed atmosphere.
Overall, the workshop proved to be a highly successful inaugural event. Participants gained in-depth knowledge of neuroanatomy, benefitted from hands-on experience with human brain dissection, and developed a deeper understanding of the research environments in Oldenburg and Groningen. The workshop also facilitated the formation of new networks and laid the groundwork for future collaborations.
The final evaluation reflected overwhelmingly positive feedback. Participants expressed a desire for more time in the dissection lab and additional preparation time in advance. On both sides, there was strong interest in further intensifying the collaboration—scientifically as well as culturally. Numerous ideas for future editions of “Meet the Brain” emerged, underscoring the workshop’s success and its potential for long-term impact.
A truly inspiring start to what promises to become a lasting and fruitful academic exchange.
