Project 3 - Indication
Sub-project 3 of the Audiology Initiative, led by PD Dr Volker Hohmann (Medical Physics at the University of Oldenburg) and Dr Andreas Büchner (Hanover Hearing Centre), is investigating the extent to which the speech intelligibility that can be achieved with a cochlear implant (CI) can be estimated before the implant is fitted. In addition to the previous clinical outine at the MHH, further measurements were carried out and a statistical model for predicting speech perception after implantation was developed based on the data collected.
Some of the additional tests carried out proved to be promising indicators, so that these tests will be integrated into the clinical routine of the preliminary examination in future. These are mainly the visual "Text Reception Threshold" test and an adaptive Oldenburg sentence test in background noise with virtual hearing aid fitting using the HörTech "Master Hearing Aid".
In order to facilitate their inclusion in clinical routine, the project is currently creating a demonstrator system that contains everything necessary to easily perform these additional tests. The system will be used at the MHH in future and can also be made available to other clinics if they are interested.
