Practical year
Clinical partners and practices
Here you will find information on our university hospitals, academic teaching hospitals and the University Medical Centre Groningen. There is an overview of the teaching practices for a PJ in general medicine.
Practical year
As Karl Jaspers (1883-1969) emphasised, doctors should view their patients holistically and in the context of their surroundings. This philosophy characterises medical training in Oldenburg, especially in the practical year, or PJ for short. In addition to specialised knowledge, interpersonal skills are also crucial.
We therefore attach great importance to ensuring that students treat patients and staff with empathy. They should learn to act responsibly and critically scrutinise scientific facts. In our modern society, medical professionals fulfil various roles that are summarised in the CanMEDS (Canadian Medical Education Directives for Specialists). These six competences
- Medical expert
- Learner/scholar
- Collaborator/member of a team
- Representative of the patient/health counsellor/health advocate
- Manager/responsible person
- Professional actor/professionalism
- Communicator/communication
form the pillars of our medical training programme. The foundation for these skills is laid during the first years of study. In the practical year, the final year of study, these skills are further deepened.

PJ tertial times
The practical year lasts a total of 48 weeks and is divided into 3 tertials of 16 weeks each:
- Internal medicine
- Surgery
- Elective subject
The order of the tertials is freely selectable. The PJ must be completed consecutively, i.e. there must be no breaks between the tertials.
The current planning of the PJ periods can be found on the website of the Medical Faculty Association.
Training periods / absences
The average weekly attendance time for PJ students is 40 hours. The respective specialist departments are responsible for monitoring attendance. So-called "study days" are not permitted.
According to the ÄApprO, up to 30 days of absence are permitted in the entire PJ. Of these, a maximum of 20 days may be missed in one tertial and, in the case of splitting, a maximum of 10 days may be missed in a splitting block.
| PJ type | Duration | Working hours (Mon-Fri) | Maximum days of absence in the entire PJ | Maximum days absent in one tertial | Maximum days absent in a splitting block |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100% full-time | 48 weeks (3x 16 weeks) | 40h/week | 30 days | 20 days | 10 days |
| 75% part-time | 64 weeks (21 weeks internal medicine, 21 weeks surgery, 22 weeks elective) | 30h/week | 40 days | 27 days | 13 days |
| 50% part-time | 96 weeks (3x 32 weeks) | 20h/week | 60 days | 40 days | 20 days |
PJ in part-time / localisation
Completing the entire PJ part-time (50 or 75 per cent) is possible for Oldenburg students with an approved hardship application. Students who would like to complete a part-time PJ should contact the PJ office in advance for advice and planning.
PJ evaluation
In accordance with ÄApprO, each PJ tertial must be evaluated by the students. The evaluation takes place online at
At the end of the evaluation, a confirmation is generated which serves as proof of evaluation for submission to the PJ office.
PJ certificate
The following documents are required for the proper certification of your PJ tertials:
- Certificate of the practical year (signed by the clinic)
- Certificate of participation (so-called "med certificate", not necessary for external students)
- logbook
- Proof of evaluation
You can find all documents for download in . The "Practical Year Certificate" may be signed on your last day of attendance at the clinic. If you take days off at the end of the tertial, this can also be before the official end of the tertial. Please note, however, that the tertial periods must be as stated in the overview.
Please also note that the "certificates of the practical year" from an external or foreign PJ must also be countersigned by your home university. Therefore, please submit the certificates of all tertials to the PJ office before using them for M3 registration.
PJ mobility
PJ tertials can be spent externally at other German universities or academic teaching hospitals. Applications are made in accordance with the requirements of the host university. Please enquire with the respective university in good time about application deadlines and modalities.
Only electives offered by the University of Oldenburg can be completed externally.
The logbook of the host university must be kept. The logbook should be available for examination by the examination committee in the third part of the medical examination (M3). It is therefore essential that you make a copy if your host university retains the logbook,
All tertials must be correctly documented in the PJ portal.
PJ abroad
PJ tertials can be completed abroad under your own responsibility. Students who would like to complete a PJ abroad should contact the PJ office in advance for advice and planning. A list of recognised clinics abroad can be requested from the PJ office.
- In the case of a PJ abroad, the equivalence of the content of the training must be confirmed by an Oldenburg specialist supervisor.
- The host university must confirm the student status.
- The English-language "Certificate of the Practical Year" is used for the certificate of the tertial abroad.
The risk of recognition, organisation and administration lies with the student.
All tertials must be correctly documented in the PJ portal. Students can also contact the International Office to plan stays abroad, for example with regard to funding.
Pregnancy in the PJ
The provisions of the Maternity Protection Act also apply to you as a PJ student. This means that as soon as you report a pregnancy, the university or hospital/practice etc. is obliged to take your new circumstance into account in accordance with the statutory provisions.
As maternity protection can only take effect when your pregnancy is announced, it is advisable to inform the hospital/practice and the university in good time.
These are the exact procedures for you:
- Notify the hospital / practice where you are completing your PJ of your pregnancy. Please also remember to inform the hospital administration if this is not done automatically by the department.
- Report your pregnancy via your personal profile in Stud.IP at the university and by email to
- Make contact with the PJ office for the purpose of further planning your PJ programme. If necessary, you can then apply to the LPA for an interruption to your PJ for a special reason. In the event of an interruption, parts of the PJ that have already been completed will continue to be recognised, provided they are no more than two years old.
- Important: You can continue your PJ in accordance with the provisions of the Maternity Protection Act! You do not have to interrupt your PJ. A risk assessment of your individual place of work will be prepared for you personally and you can continue to complete your PJ in accordance with this assessment.
- There are hospital-specific areas in which you cannot complete your PJ as a pregnant woman. These include, for example, infection wards, areas with high radiation exposure or paediatric departments. In consultation with you and the clinics, we will look for alternative areas or a more suitable schedule.
- The following applies to your M3 examination: During the statutory protection period before and after childbirth, you may take the M3 examination at your own request.
