Master of Applied Musicology

Master of Arts Applied Musicology

  • Start of programme: winter semester
  • Standard period of study: 4 semesters
  • Credits: 120 CP
  • Qualification: Master of Arts
  • Annual intake: 20 students

From the 2007/2008 winter semester, the Institute of Music is offering a specialist Master’s programme in the subject of Applied Musicology.

The Master’s programme in Applied Musicology equips students with the skills needed to shape contemporary musical life (music journalism, music policy, organisation and music management, cultural education, etc.). This includes practical musical, theoretical-analytical, organisational and communicative skills. Students establish contacts with the networks and institutions of the contemporary music scene in the region whilst still studying.

The Master’s programme in Applied Musicology prepares students for professional careers and leadership roles within institutions and projects in the contemporary music scene. Particular emphasis is placed on the areas of interculturalism and music education.

Organisations, companies, projects and initiatives within the contemporary music scene require qualified staff with flexible, interdisciplinary skills. The degree programme prepares students for the demands of evolving fields of work: freelance/self-employed, locally specific, globally networked, demand-oriented, culturally diverse and socially conscious. The potential range of activities extends from publishing and record label work, local music policy and administration, and the conception and organisation of music events, through to music and cultural work with adults and older people.
