Prof. Dr Ortwin Peithmann

Topic: KLIFF - Climate Impact Research in Lower Saxony, research and cross-cutting topic 2: IMPLAN - IMplementation of results from KLIFF in spatial PLANNING in Lower Saxony

Head: Prof. i.R. Dr Ortwin Peithmann (ZENARiO, University of Oldenburg) and Prof. Dr Dietmar Scholich (Academy for Spatial Research and Planning, Hanover)

Collaborators: Dipl.Geogr. Enke Franck (Academy for Spatial Research and Planning, Hanover), Dipl.-Ing. Spatial Planning Jan Spiekermann (University of Oldenburg)

Summary: The majority of the expected impacts of climate change have spatial references and consequences. Accordingly, adaptation measures often have to be spatial or area-related. The aim of the cross-sectional sub-project "IMplementation of results from KLIFF in spatial PLANNING in Lower Saxony (IMPLAN)" is therefore to investigate the significance of the individual research results of the other KLIFF research topics for spatial planning in Lower Saxony. In order for adaptation measures to climate change to be implemented, a dialogue and networking process with those institutions responsible for corresponding adaptation strategies or involved in their implementation must be institutionalised in parallel with the diverse sectoral scientific investigations into the effects of climate change. Early adaptation to climate change can mitigate possible hazardous situations, reduce the potential for damage and thus reduce the economic costs of climate change as well as the impact on people and the environment and requires long-term and forward-looking planning. The "end product" of IMPLAN should be a problem description of the spatial climate change adaptation requirements and the possibilities for their planning instrumentation by 2013. The concrete options for action will be summarised in the form of guidelines and a checklist for planning practice in Lower Saxony with examples of best practice.
