Gender constructions and violence. Ambivalences of modernity in the process of globalisation
Project leaders: Dr Lydia Potts, Prof Dr Silke Wenk, Prof Dr Ilse Dröge-Modelmog
Research assistant: Martina Kamp (MA)
Duration: 01.04.2002 - 31.12.2003
One of the starting points of this interdisciplinary project (cultural studies, sociology, political science, history, Islamic studies) was the events of 11 September 2001, the reception of which underlined the need to develop a theoretical basis for transcultural research into violence. In terms of content, the focus was on exploring the diverse ruptures and ambivalences in the relationship between modernity, violence and gender. The central problem areas examined were, on the one hand, the specific entanglement of gender and violence relations in modern nation states and, on the other hand, the questions of the perspectives and positions of power from which violence is discussed. For these structure the reflection on what is labelled (and scandalised) as violence or what disappears from perception and is thus negated, whereby not least cultural and geopolitical contexts must be taken into account.
